Evidence-Based Therapies for Addiction and Trauma
Our clinical team uses proven methods to help men process trauma, regulate emotions, and build skills that support long-term sobriety.
Our Clinical Philosophy
Pioneer Point combines evidence-based therapies with 12-step immersion to treat the whole person. We don’t just focus on stopping substance use. We address the trauma, pain, and patterns that drive it.
Our clinical approach is trauma-informed, client-centered, and rooted in accountability. We tailor treatment to each man’s needs and measure progress using clear, trackable goals.
Therapies We Use
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR helps men process traumatic memories so they no longer trigger overwhelming emotions or cravings. It's one of the most effective trauma therapies available and is especially helpful for men with PTSD or unresolved childhood trauma.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
IFS helps men understand the different "parts" of themselves, such as the part that wants to stay sober and the part that seeks relief through substances. This therapy builds self-compassion and helps men heal internal conflict.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps men identify and challenge distorted thinking patterns that lead to substance use. It's practical, skill-based, and effective for both addiction and co-occurring anxiety or depression
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT teaches emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. It's especially helpful for men who struggle with intense emotions, impulsivity, or relationship conflict.
Motivational Interviewing
This approach helps men find their own reasons for change rather than being told what to do. It builds intrinsic motivation and reduces resistance to treatment.
12-Step Facilitation
We provide structured guidance through the 12 step framework. Men work the steps with support, complete written assignments, and prepare for sponsorship after discharge.
Nature-Based Therapy
Time near Lake Tenkiller provides space for reflection, grounding, and connection. Men process difficult emotions on the water, practice mindfulness in the outdoors, and build resilience through physical activity and time in nature.
How Therapy and 12-Step Work Together
Some programs separate therapy from 12-step work. We integrate them.
Men work through trauma in individual therapy while also engaging with the 12 steps in group settings. Trauma work helps men understand why they used. Step work gives them a framework for staying accountable and building a sober community.
Together, these approaches create a foundation that holds up after treatment ends.
Individual vs. Group Therapy
Both are essential. Individual therapy goes deep. Group therapy builds community and accountability.
Individual Therapy
Group Therapy
Group sessions allow men to process experiences with peers, practice vulnerability in a safe space, give and receive feedback, and build the interpersonal skills needed for healthy relationships.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
At Pioneer Point Recovery, our goal is lasting recovery and freedom from the cycle of substance use. Our treatment model is abstinence-based, while recognizing that medications can play an important and clinically appropriate role in helping some individuals achieve stability and sustain recovery.
For clients with opioid or other substance use disorders, medications may be utilized when clinically indicated as one component of a comprehensive treatment plan. This may include medications used to help manage withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, support stabilization, and decrease the risk of return to use during the early stages of recovery.
Medication is not automatically prescribed to every client with an opioid use disorder, nor do we view medication alone as a substitute for treatment. Decisions regarding medication are individualized and made in collaboration with the client and appropriate medical professionals based on clinical need, treatment goals, history, and response to care.
When medication is appropriate, it is integrated alongside the broader Pioneer Point treatment experience—including individual and group therapy, trauma-focused work, family support, Twelve-Step immersion, recovery education, and the development of the skills and relationships necessary for long-term recovery.
Our philosophy is simple: medication can support recovery, but recovery is about much more than medication. We meet each client where he is, evaluate what will best support his recovery, and build an individualized path toward lasting sobriety.
How Progress Is Measured
We don’t rely on guesswork. We track progress using clear, measurable goals set at intake, weekly check-ins with the clinical team to assess what’s working, self-reported improvements in mood, coping skills, and relationships, family feedback during therapy sessions, and completion of step work and therapy assignments.
Men and their families always know where things stand and what the next step is.
